episode "Mr. Monk and the Red Herring," after two men break into her
house. The first man pretends to be a water meter inspector, but she
catches him snooping in the living room; the second man, his
accomplice, breaks in during the night. Natalie wakes up and catches
him in the act, and as they struggle, she fatally stabs him with a
pair of scissors in self-defense. Captain Stottlemeyer and Lieutenant
Disher, baffled, suggest that she ask Monk to look into the case. Monk
has been without an assistant for three months since Sharona's
departure, and he initially mistakes Natalie's inquiry as an
expression of interest about the job. She declines at first, but
changes her mind after Monk shows kindness toward her daughter Julie
over the course of the investigation, a trait that reminds them of
Natalie's late husband Mitch. Monk's offer also gives her a chance to
leave her current job as a bartender, which she dislikes. The
transition from Sharona to Natalie proves to be a rough one, and Monk
and Natalie remain uneasy around each other until the end of the
episode "Mr. Monk Gets Stuck in Traffic." In the novel Mr. Monk and
the Two Assistants, Natalie mentions that for a while, Monk,
Stottlemeyer and Disher frequently compared her to Sharona, but
finally accepted her for who she was.
